But what exactly are perennials ? In short, they are plants that come back every year. They are available in all shapes and sizes. Native species (which occur naturally in the Netherlands) are also often found in nature. Perennials overwinter with their roots. Many species hibernate both above and below ground and many species lose their 'foliage' in autumn and winter and grow again in spring or summer with new leaves and flowers. Various bulb flowers, such as crocuses, snowdrops, blue grapes and hyacinth, are also perennials. Many species are referred to as 'naturalization', i.e. they reproduce themselves with new bulbs or seeds.
Competitors
Most perennials have relatively many leaves. Because there is little light under this leaf, weeds stay away. That saves maintenance! Perennials often sprout early in the spring, so they even outpace many weeds. Some species, such as mugwort , vervain and lady's mantle , even produce natural substances that inhibit weeds from germinating. Useful! Plants can also compete with each other. Specimens with a large root system will win out over weeds over time.
Organic plants are healthy plants
We consciously choose organic perennials because we know for sure that they have been grown without chemical pesticides and fertilizers. They grew up at their own natural pace in healthy soil full of life. You can easily create these ideal conditions with our plants on your balcony, terrace or in the garden, provided you do not spray the plants with a chemical, which kills useful animals such as bees. We need them for pollination of crops, including your plants and flowers. In addition, they serve as food for other larger animals, such as birds. 'GUTC' plants can be planted in the ground, pot and all. Fast and easy.
Decorative value
The garden plants we selected feel comfortable in the city. They can grow in the sun or semi-shade and thrive in a water- and air-permeable soil. For example, we prefer not to sell shade plants because they would die in full sun. Or water-loving specimens, because they do not do well in a pot, on the terrace or in the average garden. This way you can enjoy your plants all year round! Tip: leave the spent buds and dry stems in the fall. Insects, amphibians and small mammals benefit from the old foliage, they overwinter in it and many species retain their ornamental value, such as the coneflower, speedwell, celestial key and various grasses.
